SSE Business Energy: Our Better Business Programme

Amber McEwen, Head of Marketing at SSE Business Energy talks about the Better Business programme, and the benefits it can bring businesses:

One of the things that drew me to work for SSE Business Energy a few years ago was the fact that SSE prides itself on being a responsible company, and works hard to do the right thing. SSE has been Fair Tax accredited for three consecutive years and has been a Living Wage accredited employer in the UK since 2013.

These values resonate with me at a personal level so, since joining SSE Business Energy, I have spent time with our Sustainability Team to understand, in depth, the work that they do. What was eye-opening to me was not just the wider societal benefits this approach delivered, but also the commercial ones as well. The ‘ah ha’ moment for me was when I realised this juggling act of wanting to do the right thing, whilst still providing a return for investors, was a dilemma faced not only by us, but all our business customers be they large or small.

Off the back of this, our SSE Better Business programme was developed. The programme encourages businesses to adopt sustainable business practices in three key areas:

*backed by a ‘Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin’ where consumption used is matched to an equivalent volume generated by our wind and hydro assets then exported to the National Grid.

**Maximum contribution is £250 per customer per accreditation. Which, for example, would cover half the costs of an SME with a turnover of £1million and below securing Fair Tax Mark accreditation.
