Celebrating Volunteers’ Week

Category : News

At SSE, we’re committed to being a responsible member of the communities where we live, work and serve.

In 2017/18, SSE employees volunteered 2,387 days, supporting more than 850 projects across the UK and Ireland. We were also named as the first employer in Scotland to achieve the UK quality standard Investing in Volunteers for Employers (IiVE).

Since it’s Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June 2019), we would like to say thank you for the fantastic contribution our employees make each year.

Millions of pounds of time and skills have been donated to charities, schools and local community groups since our Be the Difference programme launched in 2010. This gives employees the opportunity to take a day away from their jobs to help local community projects.

Most recently, SSE Business Energy’s marketing team spent the day with the UK’s leading mental health sports charity, Sport in Mind. Based near our Reading office, they deliver physical activity projects in partnership with the NHS. Their mission is to promote mental wellbeing, improve physical health, combat social isolation and empower people to move their lives forward in a positive direction.

Our team got physical helping with football and rounders sessions! These form part of a wider activity timetable that takes place across various Berkshire venues each week.

Did you know that participating in physical activities each week can have the following benefits?

  • Cope with the stresses of daily life more effectively
  • Improve physical health
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Meet new people and make friends
  • Improve concentration and sleeping patterns
  • Provide a natural energy boost
  • Reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Release chemicals in your brain that make you feel happy

Sport in Mind has supported over 10,000 people experiencing mental health problems since their launch in 2009, proving sport can be a fantastic force to bring people together to talk about mental health and change attitudes. You can find out more at

At SSE, we’re lucky to have the opportunity to help fantastic causes every year. With so many of our colleagues taking part in our Be the Difference programme, we know well the benefits volunteering can bring for the organisation, the charity, and the individual.

If you want more information on SSE’s Be the Difference programme, or you know of a charity or community group that could use our help, please let us know at
